Ava DuVernay refers to herself as "just a black girl from Compton, who gets to make movies"  but we all know there's so much more to this powerhouse.

I mean come on, they don't just give $100 million budget film to just anyone!

Defying the status quo, DuVernay did not go to film school. She picked up her first camera at 32 and got to work. Continuing in her full-time role in PR,  DuVernay took directing classes and studied her terminology. Soon after, she created her first couple of short films. After winning a Sundance award for her short film "Middle of Nowhere" it was up from there.
